Knocking Doors in a Battleground State
The two questions I hear most as a canvasser in a battleground state during the 2024 Presidential election.
The two questions I keep hearing now are - Are we (🌊) going to win? And. What gives you hope?
Are we going to win? We can, no one knows. Anyone saying we are or aren’t is guessing. If history repeats itself, despite over 150 million votes cast, with a 4% margin for Vice President Harris, this could come down to 100,000 votes across a handful of states that are a tossup. That is 00.06% of the votes. Yikes.
Roughly half of the people who will vote have already done so. That means the outcome is far from decided. Show up, find a way to get people to show up. I helped someone make this decision this past weekend. I was sitting on my couch going through the address book on my phone. It can be done.
Once everybody else does their thing, we’ll count the ballots, and then we’ll know. Until then, get busy. After you read why you already have hope, and what you really want.
What gives me hope?
A lot of things.
President Biden made the right call after getting tough love from his friends and allies. That is the singular act that delivered hope to a nation of Democrats. Do you remember 106 days ago? Things were grim at best.
Thank you, Joe 🐐. Thank you to everyone who had the tough conversations with a friend and ally.
Since then, the people's reaction to rally around Vice President Harris. No muss, no fuss. From regular people to popular culture, donors, and the political apparatus. She was a heartbeat away from the job for four years. It was a no-brainer, and everyone agreed. #grateful
The way the Vice President and her team put together a campaign overnight. The fact that joy and a positive message were part of the campaign, not just a focus on the genuine dumpster fire that is Donald Trump. Presidential campaigns often start years in advance. This one was a little over three months from start to finish. Wow. Such effective. Very Amaze.
Organizing with my people at Outagamie Dems, sharing the excitement and planning for our role. Hope feeds on hope. Hope applied to positive action breeds more hope. Volunteering for rallies and seeing those rallies drive tons of new volunteers to our events.
Knocking on doors and talking to voters. Hearing their excitement for the campaign. Hearing about traditional conservatives who have decided to vote for Harris. Hearing undecideds in general, sound like they either lean Dem or will sit out entirely.
I don’t think people lack hope at this point. There is plenty of reason to have hope. If you didn’t have hope right now, you’d be depressed or angry. What I think is more common is people feeling anxiety. I have some myself. Hope isn’t the cure for anxiety; certainty is. So the next question is, how do you find certainty? That, my friend is a question for another post.
Stay hopeful, take action, I’ll be in touch.
